The star-studded Opening Ceremony of the Cannes International Film Festival served as a fitting launch for the new Ulysse Nardin Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace.
Devil in the Details
Anything worth having takes time and effort, and the Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace is no exception. Each stroke of colour on the Executive Rectangle which occupies the center of the dial is painstakingly applied by hand, and the same effect is seen on the outer edge of the dial as well. Master artisans use brushes the width of a single eyelash to achieve the dazzling effect.
If there is one thing the red carpet regulars at Cannes understand better than most, it is the idea of bespoke customization, and Ulysse Nardin pulls out all the stops in that regard with the Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace.
The hand-painted brushstrokes can be created in a myriad of colours, resulting in endless colour-combinations and no two pieces being the same.
While the idea of multi-coloured details taking over the face of a timepiece may not appeal to some, Ulysse Nardin, to our eyes, manages to create an artistic and extremely tasteful timepiece with the Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace.
Directly inspired by the legendary Star Wars craft, the Falcon Millenium, the Ulysse Nardin Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace has an ultra-light titanium case measuring 45mm. The ‘hyperspace’ flying tourbillon, a delicate symbol of Ulysse Nardin’s expertise in fine watchmaking is visible at 6 o’clock and has the appearance of being partially framed and highlighted by the colourful Executive Rectangle.
The absence of a traditional dial gives us a clear view of the minimalistic skeletonized movement of the Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace, powered by Ulysse Nardin’s in-house caliber UN-171. The movement is a bare-bones rendition of the mechanics that make a timepiece like this work, and is clear evidence that often, the simplest things are able to accomplish great feats.
The Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace has a power-reserve of 7-days, and the hour-markers are punctuated with oversized Roman numerals at 3,6,9 and 12 o’clock, which adds to the inter-galactic look and feel of the watch.
Held in place by a black carbon-effect leather strap, the Executive Skeleton Tourbillon Hyperspace definitely stole the spotlight at Cannes.
HOT Verdict: A unique and exquisite timepiece that made quite an impression on the red carpet!
