The new Métiers d’Art Fabuleux Ornements collection celebrates the finest ornaments drawn from the decorative arts of several cultures. The Métiers d’Art collection by Vacheron Constantin has always been known for the combination of artistic crafts that go into the making of the timepiece.
This collection has since many years evoked the beauty of different and varied cultures as well. This time round, ten different master artisans of the manufacture have taken turns in providing talented reinterpretations of Ottoman architecture, Chinese embroidery, Indian manuscripts and French lacework.
Needless to say, all these watches are exquisitely feminine creations! They are also all equipped with an ethereal hand-engraved calibre echoing the precious dial ornamentation and enshrining a subtle blend of inner and outer beauty.
Métiers d’Art Fabuleux Ornements – India manuscript
This is a watch that showcases the breath-taking arts of grand feu champlevé enamelling and hand engraving. Pink gold is the metal of choice of the case. A diamond-set bezel encases the case. Well, this one is indeed an enamelling wonder. Ten vibrant enamel colours blossom on the dial. These shimmering shades form oriental-inspired flowers blooming against a blue sky.
The world of rich Indian illustrations opens up in this piece. The master-enameller has expressed the vivacity of these motifs through the intense enamels surrounding the openworked calibre. They echo the floral motifs decorating the margins of ancient oriental writings. The contours of its décor are first traced using the champlevé technique to create cavities separated by thin gold partitions in order to apply the enamels.
The ten different hues represent a daunting challenge in terms of mastering the successive firings, a process that calls for a true alchemist’s skill. The foliage, which is meticulously hand-engraved after enamelling, heightens the radiance of the watch and echoes the engraving of the openworked calibre. This is one of the most delicate stages, since even the slightest slip of the hand can jeopardise the entire creation.
Colourfully illustrated Indian manuscripts were at the inspiration core for this watch. It is quite common to find examples of motifs accompanying various forms of Indian manuscripts, Vacheron Constantin was inspired to try and recreate these floral designs in different colours using traditional crafts. Hence, the design team replicated the colourful motifs using artistic crafts of Champleve enamelling technique.
