History often repeats itself, and while that may not always be desirable, when it comes to horological masterpieces like the Louis Moinet Tempograph Chrome, we can certainly be glad that it did!
The Tempograph Chrome from independent watchmaking atelier Louis Moinet is a second-generation iteration of one of the brand’s most popular timepieces, the 20-second Tempograph, which has long been sold out and is now a much sought after collector’s item.
The new Tempograph Chrome draws from the fundamentals of its predecessor, showcasing the elegant 20-second retrograde hand in the top right corner of the skeletonized dial. The hours and minutes sub-dial also remains at the 4 o’clock position, adorned with Louis Moinet’s signature ‘dewdrop’ style hands.
Adjacent to 9 o’clock on the dial of the Tempograph Chrome is a wheel, divided in to three segments, one each in red, black and grey, collectively marking one minute. The visible mechanics demonstrate Atelier Louis Moinet’s expertise as makers of complex timepieces, seamlessly able to blend technical prowess with aesthetic superiority.
While the Tempograph Chrome does not differ fundamentally from the original 20-second Tempograph released in a limited edition a few years ago, this new watch features at least 2 firsts.
The Tempograph Chrome has been crafted in two striking models, one with a royal blue and one with a black base. The blue Tempograph is set in a stainless steel 44mm case, the first time steel has been used for the Tempograph case, while the black features a warm rose gold case. The case shape itself is borrowed from another Louis Moinet bestseller, the Memoris, which is also hailed as the first chronograph ever created.
The hours and minutes sub-dial on the Tempograph Chrome is coloured with blue or black lacquer to match the rest of the surround and is elegantly decorated with a concentric Clou de Paris pattern, which is a signature of the brand and gives the timepiece a sophisticated touch.
Limited to just 60-pieces each in blue and black, the Tempograph Chrome is a thoroughly modern watch and the 20-second retrograde seconds complication adds a touch of fun and lively movement to it, jumping back in a quick-footed dance every 20-seconds and making it an exciting acquisition for any lover of high quality horology.
HOT Verdict: A masterpiece of fine watchmaking with a fleet-footed, fun twist!
