This year at Baselworld, the house of Breguet presented a re-envisioned model of the Reine de Naples 8908, the very first watch of the iconic Reine de Naples collection which made its debut in 2002.
The original Reine de Naples 8908 was the first elegant timepiece in the collection named for Caroline Murat, the Queen of Naples in the early 1800s. As a patron of A.L Breguet, Caroline Murat commissioned a wristwatch to be made to her exact specifications in 1810, and the Breguet model no. 2639 was recorded as an ‘oblong shaped repeater watch fitted with a dainty wristlet’.
In the Reine de Naples 8908, the thermometer and fast-slow indicator of Carloline Murat’s model no. 2639 watch from 1812 was replaced by a moonphase and a power reserve indicator.
The new Reine de Naples 8908 has an 18K rose gold case in the immediately recognizable ‘egg’ shape associated with the Reine de Naples collection. 128 brilliant-cut diamonds embellish the bezel and flange, weighing a total of approximately 0.77 carats and adding a touch of sparkle to the watch.
The medium-sized case measures 36.50 x 28.45mm and the crown of the Reine de Naples 8908 is set with a cabochon-cut ruby, which is a signature of the delightfully feminine collection.
Natural Tahitian mother-of-pearl, which is almost iridescent in its beauty has been used for the dial, and its colours perfectly highlight the moonphase and power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock.
An offset hour and minute sub-dial sits comfortably at 6 o’clock with an intersecting small-seconds sub-dial at 7 o’clock. Both sub-dials of the Reine de Naples 8908 are in engine-turned silver, characteristic of the brand, and the hour, minute and seconds hands are in blued-steel.
The Reine de Naples 8908 is powered by Breguet’s in-house caliber 537 automatic movement, which is individually signed and numbered. The artistically crafted movement is visible through the sapphire crystal case-back, and the Reine de Naples 8908 comes with an elegant and classy black satin strap with a rose gold clasp.
For the woman looking for an added touch of glamour and shine, a version of the watch is also available with a rose-gold bracelet to match the case.
HOT Verdict: We’d feel every bit the queen with this watch on our wrist!
