Watchmakers have consistently expressed a reverence for the Chinese culture by commemorating each year with the symbol of that year, as per the Chinese Zodiac. In 2017, rooster watches find bespoke expression.
The Chinese Horoscope has been around for thousands of years, long before its Western counterpart. Rooster is the tenth in the 12-year cycle of Chinese zodiac sign and this is the year of the Rooster. The Rooster is almost the epitome of fidelity and punctuality. For ancestors who had no alarm clocks, the crowing was significant, as it could awaken people to get up and start to work! The Rooster thus appears on bespoke watches to mark the Chinese New Year. Here are some exceptional rooster watches…
Polo Tourbillon Relatif by Piaget
This is an exclusive and unique masterpiece in white gold and black enamel. There is only one of it, and hence it is exceptionally special. A master engraver and enameller have come together to stage the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac on the dial of a Piaget Polo timepiece combining champlevé Grand Feu enamelling with delicate hand engravings of each of the animals.
Altiplano Chinese Zodiac from Piaget
The thinnest watch is the canvas for expression of the zodiac. World-renowned master enameller Anita Porchet has unleashed her imagination to bring to life the Rooster of the Chinese zodiac. She uses the cloisonné enamelling technique in order to express the subtlest of detailing. Limited to just 38 pieces, this collector’s edition is a fitting homage to great skill of the métiers d’art with their ancestral techniques so passionately nurtured by Piaget.
Turbine Rooster by Perrelet
The distinctive dial of this watch steals the show. The turbine with its 12 anodised aluminium blades is finely decorated with the twelve signs of the Chinese horoscope. These are engraved, in matching tones, either figuratively or in Chinese characters. The Rooster stands out in a brilliant red on the 6 o’clock blade. Produced in a limited edition of 100 timepieces, the individual serial number is engraved on the case-back of each Turbine Rooster.
Luminor 1950 Sealand 3 Days Automatic Acciaio by Officine Panerai
Each of the 99 watches produced for this special edition has been adorned by hand by the best Italian master engravers using the ancient technique of “sparsello”, so named after the special tool used to decorate the cover, which requires extraordinary skill. The engraved cover protects a grey dial that is simple and easy to read. The movement of the new watch is the P.9000 automatic calibre, entirely produced by Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel.
Petite Heure Minute by Jaquet Droz
Taking this iconic model as a canvas, the maison expresses its artistic prowess in four new watches. Two of the models pay tribute to miniature painting. The rooster is accompanied by peonies in a watercolour style to echo Chinese calligraphy masterpieces. The miniature sculpture technique was used for the other two precious models. Limited to 28 pieces, the first Petite Heure Minute Rooster combines volumes of red gold and its unique light with a dial inlaid with jadeite and mother-of-pearl, which are hand-engraved in the Jaquet Droz workshops. In addition, a limited edition of eight entirely hand-painted pieces are illuminated by glistening rooster feathers.
These rooster watches are collector’s pieces that will always remain witness to the creative energies of the watch manufacturers who respect sentiments of watch enthusiasts and time and again come out with stellar pieces that become classics!
