The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller, one of the most coveted watches for world travellers, appears in Rolesor- a marriage of gold and steel, for the first time ever.
The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller is a star in the Oyster collection. Ever since its launch, it has ruled the skies…that is to say, been a hot favourite with world travellers thanks to its exceptional functionality and stellar good looks!
Rolex – Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
Rolesor is the combination of gold and steel on a Rolex watch. While it has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, it appears on this watch for the first time. Two noble and precious metals meet to make this unique material. Gold is attractive for its lustre and stability while steel is highly resistant, known for its strength and reliability.
On the yellow Rolesor version of the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller, the bezel, the winding crown as well as the centre bracelet links are made of 18 carat yellow gold, while the middle case and the outer links of the bracelet are in 904L steel. On the white Rolesor version, the bezel is made of 18 carat white gold, while the crown, middle case and bracelet are in 904L steel.
Indications of time
One of the chief features of this exceptional watch is the second time-zone display on an off-centre disc on the dial. Not only is the disc aesthetically appealing, but also has excellent legibility. A fixed red triangle denotes the reference time, the wearer’s usual location. The 24-hour display allows for clear distinction between the day and night hours. Changing of the local time does not affect the reference time and hence the accuracy is maintained.
Local time is indicated by the conventional centre hour, minute and seconds hands. Changing the time for a new time zone is easy thanks to the independently adjustable hour hand that can be adjusted independently in one-hour increments both forwards and backwards, so that changing the local hour does not affect the minutes and seconds hands, and thus, the accuracy of time is preserved. The date change is linked to local time and occurs within a few milliseconds at midnight.
The watch also features the patented Saros mechanism, named after an astronomical phenomenon of the same name. This is indeed revolutionary in nature. This intelligent mechanism is based on only two gear ratios and four gear wheels added to the traditional Rolex instantaneous date calendar. The system makes use of clever design and calculations. The Saros system is based on an annual cycle during which a satellite wheel engaged with a planetary wheel finishes each month in a particular configuration, activating, or not, the double date jump for the month in question. Celestial perfection indeed!
Such mechanical simplicity ensures extreme reliability in the annual calendar function. The annual calendar thus automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months and it needs to be adjusted only once a year on 1 March, taking into account that February has only 28 or 29 days. The month is displayed discreetly, and attractively as deep red colour in a window out of the twelve windows that punctuate the circumference of the dial outside the hour markers.
A watchmaking feat
The Sky-Dweller also has an innovative system for setting functions. The rotatable Ring Command bezel is responsible for this and is indeed a very simplified interface to set the functions of the watch. The unique fluting on the bezel is responsible for the optimal grip that makes it very easy for the user to operate while he is setting the watch.
What seems extremely simple and easy to operate is actually a state-of-the-art watchmaking feat! The interface is based on a complex mechanical module, which consists of no fewer than 60 components. Needless to say, it demands micromechanical expertise, which is the reason why a revolutionary interaction between the bezel and the movement is possible. Another very relevant factor that comes to play here is the absolute in-house mastery of Rolex over the manufacturing of each component.
Like all Rolex watches, the new Sky-Dweller carries the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015 to ensure singular performance on the wrist.
Ultimately, people who reach the skies, and dwell in them have an undeniable quality- skill and style. The Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller embraces both these worlds with the ease of a master. This is perhaps why it is the king of the skies!
