Cars and watches have an inextricable link. HOT explores one such collaboration between Chopard and Mille Miglia, one of the most popular racing events.
As the Mille Miglia celebrates the milestone of 90 years, it brings to mind the link between cars and watches. Watch lovers find very often that design codes of the automobile industry assume a place of pride on watches as well. Many watchmakers forge close relationships with car makers and racing events. The excitement on the tracks seems to penetrate watchmaking seamlessly!
Down the memory lane
The Mille Miglia was always a race with a difference. It was created in 1927 by two aristocrats so as to compensate for the loss of the Italian Grand Prix by their hometown of Brescia. What was different about it was that it brought racing back to the road. It took the original option of having racing cars compete on roads rather than tracks!
There were some tough moments in the journey of the race. For instance, in 1957 it was discontinued for safety reasons. 20 years later it was revived under the name Mille Miglia Storica and became the world’s most prestigious classic car endurance race. Since 1977, there was a rebirth of sorts, when the race became a regularity race for classic and vintage cars. It has never looked back since then, and is the world’s most famous regularity race for classic cars.
Today, the race is reserved for models of which at least one had taken part in the original race between 1927 and 1957. Needless to say, this makes the race highly exclusive. After all, only 450 handpicked teams can take part. It remains to be nothing short of a dream event and is definitely the biggest date on the Italian sports calendar! This year, the event took place from 18 to 21 May, 2017.
One of the best things about collaborations is the fact that new watches, inspired from the aesthetics of automobile make their way on the wrists of aficionados. Chopard is the official timekeeper and world sponsor of the Mille Miglia. Chopard annually offers a new interpretation of its unique and instantly recognisable design watch collection. The brand has thus created a collection of luxury sports watches. These have indeed become the brand’s unmistakable sporting emblem. Its unique and instantly recognisable design has made this collection one of the greatest classics of contemporary watchmaking. The “Race Edition”, is a limited series which pays tribute to the automobile world.
