With the Reine de Naples collection, Breguet revisits a glorious past laden with the story of the birth of the wristwatch. HOT explores two watches from the new collection.
In 1812, at a time when pocket watches were the predominant norm, Breguet responded to a request from Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, by creating a uniquely built wristwatch, the first of its kind. It was an oval-shaped complicated model and was fitted with a wristlet composed of twisted hair and gold thread. This invention was a dynamic overhaul of the very concept of timepieces from an object kept hidden in the pocket, to a jewellery creation proudly worn on the wrist.
The queen returns…
Reine de Naples, a French phrase, translates into “Queen of Naples”. In the context of this bit of history, one can understand how the very name of the collection is laden with innovation and precious customization, the ultimate symbol of luxury. This year the brand proudly revisits one of the bestsellers in the ladies’ collection.
Reine de Naples 8918
The mesmerizingly beautiful model leads the distinctly larger Breguet numerals into a merry dance. The elegant blue numerals on the shimmering Tahitian mother-of-pearl is enchanting indeed. The hand- guilloché natural white mother-of-pearl dial offset at 6 o’clock naturally draws the gaze to the striking sparkle of a pear-shape diamond. Delicately framing this face is a rose gold case set with brilliant-cut diamonds on the bezel and flange, as well as a briolette-cut diamond on the crown.
Breguet Reine de Naples Mini 8928
The rose gold oval case encases an extremely pure white mother-of-pearl dial. The dial follows the curve of the case, thereby creating an unusual depth effect highlighting the two large, equally rounded rose gold hour-markers appearing at 6 and 12 o’clock. Breguet wished to play with shapes and materials in order to attract the eye and draw it into the fascinating dimensions of time. The watch is fitted with a sapphire crystal caseback providing the opportunity to admire its mechanical self- winding movement, calibre 591C. Crafted in keeping with the finest watchmaking traditions, its oscillating weight is in solid gold, hand-engraved on a rose engine.
While these two spectacular watches give a glimpse into the wondrous collection, the Reine de Naples aesthetic expands to include a few other bespoke pieces as well. Merging exquisite watchmaking and gem setting skills, Reine de Naples is all set to rule.
