A dress watch and a sports watch would logically seem to belong at two ends of the horological spectrum, but with the Manero Flyback, first introduced in 2016, Carl F. Bucherer, no stranger to ‘firsts’ in watchmaking, has seamlessly created what we feel quite comfortable calling a ‘dressy sports watch’.
Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback
Old and New
The Flyback chronograph itself is a pretty vintage complication if you think about it, and it has a rugged history. First designed for watches worn by pilots, and made popular by race-car drivers, the Flyback chronograph can be reset and re-started using a single press of a button instead of 2, once to reset and once to restart the timer.
Despite its strong resonance with motor-sport, and the most common use of a chronograph being to time different events, most often sports-related, the Manero Flyback is a classically elegant watch that would appropriately accessorize more formal attire.
Which Colour Would You Choose?
The original Manero Flyback from 2016 had either a stainless steel or an 18K rose gold case measuring 43mm with the chronograph pusher located at 4 o’clock, and an elegant silver dial. The dial features 2 chronograph sub-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock respectively and an unconventionally placed date window at 6 o’clock.
The timepiece is powered by Carl F. Bucherer’s in-house automatic caliber CFB 1970 and boasts a 42-hour power reserve. In 2017, the brand introduced several new models of the Manero Flyback; a stainless-steel version with a grey dial and grey alligator strap, and two 18K rose gold versions with either a black dial and matching black alligator strap or a champagne coloured dial and light brown alligator strap.
Baselworld 2018 also saw a new avatar of the Manero Flyback with a stainless-steel case, black dial and dark brown alligator leather strap. This unfailingly timeless combination of colours and metal have resulted in a timepiece that will be ‘flying’ off the shelves in no time!
Finally, in a step outside the traditional lines of the Manero Flyback watches, Carl F. Bucherer has introduced a retro-version in stainless-steel with red highlights and a golden brown strap made from kudu-leather.
Despite the newer versions released in 2018, the 2017 stainless steel Manero Flyback with a grey dial and matching grey alligator strap remains our HOT pick from the collection.
Whichever version you choose, the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback is an eye-catching timepiece that pays a subtle tribute to the old-school origins of the complication, and maintains its intrinsic link to the motor-racing inspired aesthetic of the entire Manero collection.
HOT Verdict: Vintage goes modern-chic and retro with equal élan in this versatile piece!
