The Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival celebrated its seventh edition at the Liberty Cinema in Mumbai. The event was inaugurated by iconic British actor Sir Ian McKellen and Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor. Also present at the event was actor Kunal Kapoor, who unveiled the festival’s catalogue. The festival was held from May 25-29, 2016.

Kashish is South Asia’s biggest and India’s only mainstream LGBT film festival. It will be a platform for screening of 182 films from 53 countries, including 27 Indian films. The three venues for the film festival were Liberty Cinema, Alliance Francaise de Bombay and Max Mueller Bhavan in Mumbai.
Since its inception in 2010, the film festival has grown into an important feature in the cultural calendar. This year’s international jury at the film festival comprises National Award-winning actor Rajeshwari Sachdev, television star Manav Gohil, filmmaker Parvathi Balagopalan, theatre director Kaizaad Kotwal and Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival, Festival Director Andrea Kuhn. Noted Bollywood actor Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares will be sponsoring cash prizes for the top three competition categories – Best Narrative Feature Film, Best Indian Narrative Short film and Best Performance in a Lead Role. In addition, Wadia Movietone will be giving away a cash prize for the Riyad Wadia Award for the Best Emerging Indian Filmmaker.
With Kashish growing strong, the Indian film industry’s support of the LGBT community is more evident than ever.
