The brand known for its pilot watches has honoured Antoine de Saint-Exupéry time and again. The distinct “Saint Exupéry look” now enters the mainstream.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the celebrated pilot and author, took off on a reconnaissance flight over France and never returned. In honour of the famed pilot, the brand has over time introduced special limited editions as a tribute to his last flight.
All these watches in honour of the pilot have featured the same tobacco colour as the flying suit he used to wear. Hence, a tobacco brown dial and a brown calfskin strap with decorative white stitching have been key features. Three new watches now have the distinctive Saint Exupéry look for the first time: The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph and the Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII and a new model of the Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36 with a brown dial.
The Pilot’s Watch Automatic 36
With a nice small size, it is a watch for those with slender wrists and for women who may prefer a watch of smaller size. With a case measuring just 36 millimetres in diameter, it is the smallest watch in the IWC portfolio. The brown dial and brown alligator strap look stunning. Of course, all the tried and tested technology of pilot watches finds its way here as well.
The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry”
The most conspicuous feature of this watch is the highly legible date and day display. It precisely handles single and aggregate stop times of up to 12 hours. The self-winding system generates a power reserve of 44 hours. This makes the watch self-sufficient enough for long-haul flights. The numerals and hands on the clearly structured dial feature luminous coatings to ensure good legibility, even at night-time.
Pilot’s Watch Mark XVIII Edition “Antoine de Saint Exupéry”
This design is inspired by the typical overalls worn by pilots in Saint-Exupéry’s era. It also features an engraving of a Lightning P-38 on the case back. It was in this particular model of aircraft that Saint-Exupéry took off on a reconnaissance flight.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a passionate pilot and also well known for his contribution to literature. IWC Schaffhausen has very aptly represented his legacy in timeless timepieces!
