Classic inscribing instruments
It’s an exquisite art form that alleviates the task of written communication and infuses it with a cultural context. We are referring to calligraphy. Arabesque patterns that adorn books, tapestries, interiors of mosques, textiles and jewellery are all due to the artistic touch of calligraphy. To enhance the offerings of calligraphic art, Montegrappa has come up with a specially designed edition of pens.
Montegrappa roped in the Lebanese artist and designer Katya Assouad Traboulsi. She combines the arabesque pattern with the intricacies of calligraphic art to create stunning designer pens. An internationally renowned artist, the Traboulsi’s creations are part of many a private collection across the world.
Her design for Montegrappa features an elegant arabesque medallion in silver as a cap top and an exquisite interplay of enamel arabesque patterns in mother-of-pearl white, red and green. Arabic calligraphy phrase adorn the pen’s barrel that’s embossed on a silver or gold background. And in the true spirit of the power of a pen, the phrase translates as – ‘The pen transports culture.’
The fountain pen comes with a wide range of nibs that are a subject of pure delight to calligraphers. The calligraphy writing instruments are made of bamboo black celluloid with sterling silver trim. The pen sports a nib in 18K gold that’s enhanced with a bi-colour arabesque motif.
Limited to 512 pieces, the pen is set in a handmade wooden case. It is priced at Rs 4,50,000 and is available at select in India.
How often have writers gazed at the stars in search of writing inspiration? How often have they evoked celestial objects to be their muse? How often have the skies witnessed their failures and successes? Innumerable times undoubtedly! But how often has a pen maker looked upon the skies to create a piece de resistance? That’s something as rare as the MoonFighter pen by RJ-Romain Jerome.
Our childhood days were filled with superheroes saving the world from alien invasion and sci-fi characters traversing the universe. Planets, asteroids, stars, satellites, rockets and spaceships filled us with wonder. Reinstating these memories and drawing on the child-like marvel that we have for the skies, Jerome created the MoonFighter pen. It is a writing instrument that is mid-way between Back to the Future and Space Invaders. It merges space mythology with a taste for fun.
Such is the design of this unique pen that it can easily get mistaken for an invention by NASA or a James Bond accessory. The sleek and simple design takes you back to the golden age of aeronautics of the Western world. In a true Art Deco style, the MoonFighter pen is an expression of Jerome’s expertise that lies in fusing various materials together.
The pen features moon dust – embodying all human fantasies of exploring the sky. The moon dust is encapsulated in the cockpit bubble. The pen has three variants – Heavy Metal, Black Metal and Vintage – each adorned with 48 hand-applied rivets. Jerome has used titanium nib for the fountain pen version and rounded tip for the rollerball pen. The MoonFighter comes in a leather pouch, which is equipped with a carbon-finished docking station.
The MoonFighter Heavy Metal is priced at CHF 1,990, while Black Metal and Vintageversions are for CHF 2,350 each.
Manufactured entirely in Switzerland, the MoonFighter’s impeccable profile and smooth curves are sure to add panache to your accessories and give flight to your fantasies.
Wild wild life
The designers of the Maison Caran d’Ache have enhanced the art of solid silver sculpting. What’s so amazing about that you ask? Well, they have done so for the limited edition Spirit of Wildlife pens.
The wild beauty of forests holds many secrets. Forests have witnessed human development and offered us resources, peace of mind and spiritual respite. They have been the inspiration for many a creative artwork. The Spirit of Wildlife writing instruments salutes the beauty of forests and their mysterious depths.
The creators at Maison Caran d’Ache have made miniature silver sculptures and finely engraved raised motifs on the writing instruments in this collection. A majestic stag and a doe encircle the body of the pen, evoking the union of a couple and the rebirth of life. The cap stages a scene featuring a stag with magnificent antlers, a pheasant and a wild boar, alongside a wood anemone.
Oak leaves and acorns are also featured as they are powerful symbols of protection and longevity. The matt black lacquered body of the pen is the perfect backdrop for the silver sculptures. The tip of the cap is set with a natural peridot, an exquisite gemstone that appears only in the green tones of plant life, symbolising harmony, love and wisdom.
Presented in its specific case, the Spirit of Wildlife pens are in a limited edition of 101. This figure denotes the longevity of the Maison Caran d’Ache.
