There is nothing like the thrill and excitement of riding, or rather, flying on a bike. Sports bikes may not have left the racetrack, but they have surely entered roads, alleys and mountains where enthusiasts try to test the limits of speed. But, speed and power is only one part of the deal. What is it in a bike that enthralls and entices the rider? Is it jaw-dropping looks? Power and performance? High-tech engines? Or stunning details and add-on features? Maybe it is the combination of all these.
The demand for superbikes is expected to grow exponentially. With aspirational lifestyles taking on an entire different meaning, it is not only younger bikers who are patronizing the segment. People in higher age brackets too are going in for an adrenaline rush that is unrivalled by any other!
We present to you five bikes that racing ahead of time.
BMW S 1000 RR
Power under control
The new BMW S 1000 RR comes with an almost exhaustive list of high-tech features that were carefully developed to maximize its high-speed performances. With their radical brakes, ABS adjustable riding modes (four modes, two for road and two others-Race and Slick), a banking rotation speed or dynamic traction control and various other features, this model is as true down a racetrack as it is down the road. The high tech aluminum bridge type frame offers a perfect mix between lightweight and rigidity thereby maximizing the motorcycle’s handling abilities.
The frame is wrapped around a 999cc, water/oil-cooled 4-cylinder 4-stroke in-line engine with four titanium valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts. The unit puts out a maximum power of 193 Hp (142 KW) at 13.000 rpm while the peak torque is rated at 83 Lb/Ft (112 Nm) at 9.750 rpm.
It comes in four colour variants- Bluefire, Sapphire Black Metallic, Granite Grey and a sporty combination of Racing Red and Alpine White. Taming power has never been so easy!
Suzuki- 2014 Hayabusa
Cutting through the air
The radically original yet timeless styling of the Hayabusa is a result of years of refinement of the original design. It personifies power, speed and a smooth ride. The 2014 model comes newly equipped with Brembo Monobloc high-performance calipers and an Antilock Brake System. These features are sure to appeal to lone riders cruising the highway as well as touring couples.
A 1340cc in-line 4-cylinder fuel injected, DOHC liquid-cooled engine with 16-valves and Twin Swirl Combustion Chambers (TSCC) provides phenomenal power and broad torque delivering breath taking acceleration. A carefully controlled system in the engine improves combustion efficiency and results in improved power delivery and a linear response. Idle Speed Control (ISC) system improves cold starting and helps maintain a stable engine idle under various conditions. S-DMS (Suzuki Drive Mode Selector) allows the rider to choose from three different engine settings depending on riding conditions or rider preferences. Various Chassis features enhance the look and working of the bike. Advanced aerodynamics offers superb wind protection both for normal and completely tucked-in seating positions. Indeed, this is a model where constant reinvention has polished the finished product!
DUCATI 1199 SUPERLEGGERA
This latest dream model features a concoction of materials such as titanium, magnesium and carbon fibre to set the highest power-to-weight ratio of any production motorcycle in history. Producing more than 200hp and weighing-in at just 155 kg, Ducati showcase their innovative engineering and stylish approach to design, while affirming the maxim “Authentic Italian Performance”. The team of engineers and specialists has revised every single element of the machine that is based on the 1199 Panigale R.
There are significant changes in the engine and functioning too. A new Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) system that is based on an Inertial Platform collaborates with Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC) and now gets automatic calibration for the rear type size and final drive ratio thereby allowing track-specific setups to be fully supported by the electronics. The Ducati Data Analysis + system, (DDA+) gets an additional sensor and software channel to record and display vehicle lean angles. The model is available in a 500-model limited edition.
While the orange-red colour scheme is enticing too, the true beauty of this model lies in its details.
Aprilia RSV4 R ABS and Factory ABS
The RSV4 is conceived around a 65° V4 engine never before seen on a factory sport bike, enhanced by the most advanced applied electronics systems to manage the engine and the bike’s dynamic performance. The illustrious manufacturer Aprillia was the first to patent the Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) dynamic control system and is, still, the only one with the exclusive self-calibration and wheelie control features.
On the new RSV4 R ABS and Factory ABS MY 2013 bikes, the APRC system has been further developed and refined in order to adapt even better to the specific needs of enthusiasts on the street and professional riders on the track. The new system includes Traction Control, Wheelie Control, Launch Control and Quick Shift. It also has a highly advanced anti-lock braking system that can be adjusted to 3 different levels (track, sport and rain) as desired. Higher chassis and engine performance distinguish the models. The new improved front braking system and upgraded engine are also noteworthy. The different front mudguard finish (only the R version), a brand new satin-finish for the headlight assembly, new exhaust silencer bottom and ergonomically designed fuel tank vastly enhance its aesthetics.
With the race-proven 999cc engine that smoothly pumps out huge midrange power and torque for class-leading real-world muscle this bike achieves the perfect balance between power and handling. The lightweight aluminum frame is equipped with a modern-design Big Piston Fork and Honda’s Unit Pro-Link® rear suspension system that features a patented Balance-Free Rear Shock—all to sharpen the CBR1000RR’s renowned ultra-responsive middleweight-style handling. The aggressive bodywork provides the correct aerodynamic flow that aids high-speed handling. Enhanced features include MotoGP-derived Honda Electronic Steering Damper, patented slipper clutch, centrally located fuel tank, iconic Honda Wing tank badge, lightweight aluminum sidestand, high tech instrument display, line-beam headlight and LED taillights. The enhanced engine redefines set standards, proving that a better-balanced bike can actually be faster than one with just a lot of power. With decades of legacy behind it, this is the essential superbike!
