Heralded a new era of timekeeping – a mechanical wristwatch with a precisely jumping digital display. It was in the year 2009 that the ZEITWERK first made an appearance and has been a crucial part of the Lange family since. There were two crucial factors that worked for the ZEITWERK at that time – a very innovative look and an extremely innovative concept.
The ZEITWERK decade
The look of course is what draws people at first glance, even before you get into the mechanics of the watch. The prominent watch face of the ZEITWERK makes it distinctive and highly legible and user friendly.
However, it is delving deep into the concept of the mechanism that shows the heights of inventiveness that the manufacture has mastered. The ZEITWERK is the first mechanical wristwatch with a constant-force escapement and a precise jumping digital display that indicates the hour and minute with jumping numerals. Within a fraction of a second, the unique mechanism advances the numeral discs, even simultaneously incrementing all three discs at the top of the hour. This time machine that beautifully orchestrates this controlled release has won numerous awards.
Ten years on, it is time to top this classic innovation with something more. A decade of success is a celebration and this milestone calls for some veritable addition! The new rendition is endowed with a new manufacture calibre featuring a remarkable extra function. The glass ring date of the ZEITWERK DATE shows the current date in red. The ring display has been perfectly harmonised with the ZEITWERK design, and it circles the dial.
ZEITWERK DATE appears in a 44.2-millimetre white gold case with a grey dial. The new addition, that is the circumferential date ring consists of glass with printed numerals from 1 to 31. The current date is displayed in red.
There is also a technique behind this apparently simple addition to the watch. To achieve this effect, a small colour segment beneath the date ring performs one step exactly at midnight. Hence, in the course of a month, it moves around the dial by one full revolution. With this arrangement, the date is always clearly legible at all times and recognisable intuitively. The date display can be adjusted with the corrector at 8 o’clock; the switching impulse is generated when it is released.
Undoubtedly, the ring date infuses inventiveness, especially in view of the fact that the large numeral discs and the prominent dial with the time bridge make it impossible to integrate a conventional date! Hence, the brand used a totally new design approach. The precisely jumping ring date matches the ZEITWERK design as a seamless fit with the unusual concept.
There is also an additional button at 4 o’clock, which is used to separately advance the hour indication. Though this was executed with considerable design modifications, it is an important feat since it enables efficient time setting.
The ZEITWERK DATE is powered by the manufacture calibre L043.8. Just viewing the clearly organised movement architecture as well as the lavish finissage of the 516-part movement is an experience in itself! Several components, for example the engraved ratchet wheel and the filigreed remontoir bridge, can be viewed through the sapphire-crystal caseback.
The ZEITWERK DATE marks a decade of an innovative watch with a befitting innovation!
